How this calculator works
Your mash tun absorbs heat at dough-in, so it behaves like a little extra cold water in the mash. This tool measures that as an equivalent water volume you can reuse everywhere.
Pour a known volume of hot water into the empty, room-temperature tun, record the water temperature going in and the stabilized temperature after a few minutes with the lid on, and the tool derives the tun's heat capacity.
The result is always expressed in liters of equivalent water, independent of the units you typed in.
Worth knowing
- Stir well and keep the lid on while the temperature settles so the reading reflects the tun, not the air.
- Enter the result as the mash tun heat capacity in the Strike Water Temperature and Mash Rest calculators, and in your Brewfather equipment profile, so every mash hits temperature first try.
